OTC's No. 4619 Professional Battery Hydrometer displays a batteries specific gravity (density) on an easy-to-read float with a scale ranging from 1.100 to 1.300. Hydrometers are used to test the state of charge of a battery cell. This is performed by measuring the density of the electrolyte, which is accomplished by measuring the specific gravity of the electrolyte. The greater the concentration of sulfuric acid, the more dense the electrolyte becomes. This high quality hydrometer includes a built in thermometer that indicates the correction factor - based on specific temperatures - that must be added or subtracted from the float reading to arrive at an accurate specific gravity reading for each battery cell.
