As of 2020, you’ll use new Form 1099 NEC to report nonemployee compensation, replacing Box 7 on the 1099 MISC. This TOPS 2020 1099 NEC Kit includes the tax forms and envelopes you need to report NEC payments for up to 26 recipients. The 1099 NEC was retired after the 1982 tax season but returns this year to simplify filing deadlines for NEC payments. You must mail or e-file your 1099 NEC to the IRS and furnish copies to your recipients by February 1, 2021. On the new 1099 NEC form, you’ll report nonemployee compensation (NEC) payments in Box 1, backup withholding in Box 4 and state withholding in Boxes 5 through 7. What counts as nonemployee compensation? You’ll need to file the NEC if you paid more than $600 in compensation to someone not your employee for services; you paid a person, partnership, estate, or, in some cases a corporation; and you withheld federal income tax (box 4) under backup withholding rules in any amount.
