A furnace flame sensor is a safety designed to detect flame. If the sensor does not detect flame, it shuts the gas valve off, preventing raw gas from dumping into your home. Over time, a flame sensor may loose it's ability to sense the flame, even when the flame is present. The distance from the base (metal tab where you fasten the sensor down) to the very tip of the sensor, is 3 5/8". If the sensor you are replacing is of a different length or orientation, your furnace probably uses a different model of sensor. If you send me the model number of your furnace, i would be happy to look up which flame sensor you need.
