This is an IR remote, please make sure there is NO obstacle in front of the Apple box receiver(a white LED blinks while pressing the remote). Without any obstruction this remote can work from ~25ft away. If you find this remote can only work within a close distance (e.g. ~10ft) or does not even work there must be something blocking the signals for the Apple box, such as behind the TV or in a cabinet/closet.
