They're available in three widths because, obviously, different sized stakes hold best in different ground: 'S' for hard ground is easiest to drive in (and pull back out), 'L' for soft ground has the most holding power, and 'M' for in between. The sM size - short Medium - is used by several premium tent brands as their one-size-fits-all stake.
